The purpose of the contract was to investigate and develop mathematical techniques that will make it possible to simply, quickly, and automatically isolate a fault in a complex system. The technique shall be directly applicable, but not necessarily be limited, to complex electronic systems. The technique is to be applied through the use of a general purpose digital computer. For demonstration purposes, a reference electronic system the Setchell-Carlson Model 159 television receiver - was chosen prior to the contract award.
