Present analysis of the shape of balloons and the expected stresses in the fabric are based on the extensive study of a multitude of problems involved in high-altitude ballooning, undertaken several years ago at the University of Minnesota under Contract Nonr 701(01).nThe analysis of "natural shape" balloons is based oh two assumptions:nA. It is assumed that the balloon will have a rotationally symmetric shape.nB. It is assumed that the material is in a state of uniaxial stress in the direction of the meridians, such that no hoop stresses occur.
