Effects on Lake Pontchartrain, La., Of Hurricane Surge Control Structures and Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Channel

A system of barriers along the south shore and across the eastern end of Lake Pontchartrain has been proposed as a plan for protecting New Orleans from hurricane damage. A model study was conducted to determine the effect of these barriers and also that of the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Channel (now under construction) on the hydraulic and salinity regimen of Lake Pontchartrain and adjoining lakes. It was concluded that: (a) freshwater inflow must be given equal consideration with any plan for modification of the salinity regimen of the lake system; (b) the proposed control structures for Chef Menteur and Rigolets would have little adverse effect on salinities and tidal heights; (c) the connection of the Gulf Outlet Channel to Lake Pontchartrain will increase salinity in the lake such that a control structure will be required.
