IMPLICATIONS OF “THE LAW OF THE WALL” FOR TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYERS

The main problem in turbulent fluid motion has been to establish some relationship, empirically or by hypotheses, between the Reynolds' stresses produced by the turbulent velocity fluctuations and the mean values of the velocity components. Several attempts have been made to achieve" this goal but so' 'far it is generally recognized that this objective has not been reached and that present understanding of the physical aspects of turbulence is far from satisfactory. Semi-empirical procedures of different kinds have been proposed but no single attempt seems so far to have been successful.
