SURFACE-FINISHING TECHNIQUES FOR LARGE PRECAST CONCRETE PANELS

This report describes experimental work undertaken to examine techniques for the production of surface finishes on large precast concrete panels of the type used in industrialized building methods. Mould cleaning and preparation should be kept to a minimum and finishing operations on the plastic concrete should not significantly extend the production cycle. Finishing techniques may have to be suitable for use with accelerated curing and in production cycles as short as six hours.nTechniques were examined for producing exposed aggregate and tooled finishes on the upper and lower faces of units cast horizontally. Plain surfaces and profiles formed on the lower face can be improved by the use of linings, whilst materials such as tiles, mosaic, concrete block or brick slips are best cast integrally on the lower face.
