An Evaluation of a New Reticle Design in Gunlaying Against Flashes

The purpose of the research was to determine the effectiveness of uti¬lizing a grid-type reticle, graduated in turns of the azimuth and elevation controls of the M60 tank, for gunlaying against enemy gun fire at night. Using the experimental reticle in a simulated firing situation, six experi¬enced and seven inexperienced gunners localized and laid an M60 tank gun on each of 40 flashes. These Ss performed somewhat more accurately than a group of experienced gunners who used the standard reticle, but did not lay as quickly on the average. No group differences were significant. In the simulated situation, performance was better than it was in a field study. Factors which may have operated in the field study to degrade per¬formance are discussed.
