INTERIM DEVELOPMENT REPORT FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OFnTWO-COLOR DIRECT VIEW STORAGE TUBE WITH SELECTIVE ERASURE

A direct view storage capable of displaying stored information in either of two colors or in intermediate hues and selectively erasing that information The operating principle is based on the fact that flood elec¬trons is near cutoff, fall within small areas on the viewing screen opposite the storage mask holes;whereas flood electrons which pass through the holes when the potential is near its maximum, (1 e , flood gun cathode potential), fall on larger overlapping areas or the viewing screen. The viewing screen consists of two phosphors. One occupies small areas m register with the storage-mask holes, while the other occupies areas surrounding the first.nThis tube is 10 inches in diameter and is based on work periormed under a previous EUSHIPS Contract. It differs from the tube developed under that contract in that a selective erase feature has been added and an axial flood gun is utilized. The additional selective erase gun permits viewing of the stored information at the written chromaticity until just prior to introduction of new information.
