The majority of replies indicated a preference for the 2 to 1 ratio format, using 70aim wide film transported at right angles to the flight axis or 5 inch wide film parallel to the flight axis. The squadron opinions were in keeping with the original Bureau of Aeronautics planning for the forward firing camera. It had been planned to use the CAX-3, 2 1/2" by 4 1/2format, 70mm camera in that location. The Aeronautical Photographic Experimental Laboratory (APEL), had reported in reference (d) that the CAX-3 camera was a good prototype camera, but was not ready for production as of 1 November 1956. In fact, production of a limited quantity of cameras was recommended at that time for fleet evaluation prior to full production.
