RAPID ANALYSIS OF MARINE SEDIMENTS FOR CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM CARBONATES

The compleximetric titration method using ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for quantitative determination of calcium and magnesium carbonates is often difficult to use on marine sediments because of high concentrations of the interfering metal ions usually present. Potassium cyanide was investigated as an inhibitor to suppress this interference. The accuracy of this method was determined by replicate analyses of standard solutions. It was concluded that an accurate determination of calcium and magnesium carbonates can be obtained by compleximetric titration using potassium cyanide as an inhibitor.
