PROPOSED STRUCTURAL EVALUATION OP HY-130/150 AND HY-180/210 STEELS AND WELDMENTS

Bureau of Ships Contract Ho. NObs-88540 summarizes the approaches U. S. Steel has agreed to employ in developing an HY-130/150 weldments and in studying the feasibility of developing an HY-180/210 weldments. These approaches are described in greater detail in the U. S. Steel proposal, which is made part of Contract No. NObs-88540 by reference. However, neither of these documents defines in detail the number and type of tests that are required to demonstrate the suitability of base metals, filler metals, joining techniques, and weldments for the fabrication of submarine hulls. Therefore, the Applied Research Laboratory formulated a laboratory program to evaluate the structural suitability of base metals and weldments for submarine hulls. This program was reviewed by various representatives of the Bureau of Ships, the Naval Research Laboratory, the Marine Engineering Laboratory, and the Applied Science Laboratory. The suggestions from those reviews have now been incorporated in the program and a detailed outline has been developed for the proposed structural evaluation of HY-130/150 and HY-180/210 steels and weldments.
