The effect of pressure on the extension of the y - loop in the iron-silicon system has been determined by means of metallographic studies, and hardness measurements performed on a series of high purity iron-silicon alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 a/o silicon respectively,, These measurements, performed at 42 kilobars and temperatures up to 1200 C indicate that the y- loop is expanded to about 10 a/o silicon at 42 kilobars as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 a/o silicon at one atmosphere. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yield satisfactory results.
