The Third Plowshare Symposium was held April 21-23, 1964, in Freeborn Hall at the University of California's Davis Campus. The theme, 'Engineering with Nuclear Explosives,' reflected the major objective of the Symposium; informing engineers in industry, in the military, in educational institutions, and in government agencies throughout the world of the current state-of-the-art from an engineering standpoint. The need for such an information exchange had been felt for some time by most organizations engaged in Plowshare activities. Since the last Plowshare Symposium in 1959, observation of a large number of nuclear detonations has established the reliability of predictions concerning the effects of nuclear explosions. The reliability of these predictions has a direct bearing on the use of nuclear explosions for civil and industrial purposes. This Symposium was attended by 700 visitors and drew world-wide attention. Other nations represented at the sessions included the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, South Africa, Austria, and Israel.
