摘要

An investigation was conducted on eight promising, highstrength titanium alloys which had as their basic composition Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn. Small percentages of beta-stabilizing elements, such as Cr, Mo, Mn, Ni and U, in various combinations along with a maximum of 4 percent Zr were added. Selection of these alloys was based upon results of a previous U. S. Army Materials Research Agency program. The series of studies consisted of (1) determining the beta transus temperature, (2) determining proper forging temperature, and (3) establishing a thermal cycle, which would result in optimum mechanical properties. The results of standard tensile and V-notch Charpy impact test bars machined from upset billets which were forged and heat treated at optimum investigated temperatures, indicated a general increase in the tensile and yield strength when compared with the base alloy, Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn. The overall improvements in strength ranged from a substantial increase of approximately 15,000 psi in both yield and tensile strengths at 0.1 percent offset for several of the alloys, to an increase of from 0 to 8,000 psi for the remainder of the alloys.
