Some Considerations in Practical Computation

This paper considers some typical problems encountered in general scientific computation. In particular, it treats some of the errors which occur in the evaluation of an integral. Four methods are considered in detail, two of which are called exact (because the operation of integration is done analytically) and two of which are particular numerical integration schemes. In all cases careful attention is given to the problems of running time, estimation of truncation error, and estimation and control of roundoff error. (Author)
