The Absorption of Long-Chain Fatty Acids by Intestinal Perfusion in Situ

The intestinal absorption of lipids has been demonstrated by several techniques, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages can be overcome by employing the method of in situ perfusion of an isolated intestinal segment for carbohydrate absorption. With this technique, the absorption of long-chain fatty acids, as bile salt micelles, has been demonstrated. The pattern of absorption is similar to the pattern for the transporting of glucose and suggests an active transport mechanism for fatty acids. (Author)
