AN INVESTIGATION OF THE BOND OF DE FORMED STEEL BARS WITH CONCRETE

The results of, and the phenomena associated with, simple earlier tests carried out with a view to determining the bond between deformed steel and concrete suggested that the amount of concrete cover, the quality of the concrete, the embedded length and the position of a bar in a beam (top or bottom) would significantly affect the results. For the purpose of determining this bond, a variety of methods are employed in the various countries. In general, these methods may be subdivided as follows:nA. tests which are simple and therefore relatively cheap, but in which the method of loading is such that the results are not applicable to actual beams (e.g. pull-out or push-out tests with the aid of cubes or prisms);nB. tests which simulate actual conditions, but which are very expensive and time-consuming (e.g. beam tests).
