Study of Methods of Implementing Poynting Vector Measurements

The results are reported of a number of experiments with the 'Poynting Sensor' at a frequency of 1 Mc. The purpose of these experiments was to verify the feasibility of making Poynting vector measurements in the near field at 1 Mc. The measurements included magnitude measurement of the E and H components of the field and their relative time phase. Phase measurement was performed with the aid of an oscilloscope and also through the use of a transistorized phase-meter which was expected to provide easier and better measurement accuracy. Multiplication of the magnitudes of E and H by cos gamma (where gamma is the relative angle between them) is also described. This was achieved through the use of a square law multiplier which provided a simple but effective means of measuring the Poynting vector directly. A description is presented of the new instrumentation used, measurement techniques, and the ground plane and its bearing on the measurement at 1 Mc. Photographs of the instrument assemblies used in performing these measurements are also given.
