SUMMARY REPORT TYPE II GAS AEROSOL FILTER MATERIAL MANUFACTURING DIRECTIVES PROCESS AND PRODUCTION STUDIES

This report covers that portion of the engineering effort by DLIS, Edgewood Arsenal related to the establishment of manufacturing directives and specifications for Type II Gas Aerosol Filter Material. It forms a part of the overall effort by DEIS in the preparation of a technical data package required for the manufacture of the M22 Civilian Protective Mask. Section I describes the operations used by the Pittsburgh Activated Carbon Company for impregnating activated charcoal. Section II covers a method of grinding and screening the impregnated charcoal. Directions for manufacturing Type II Gas Aerosol Filter Material and its component materials (core and backing materials) are found in Section III. A comprehensive report by Riesel Paper Corporation covering process and production studies, on gas aerosol filter material is found in Section IV.Section V "contains specifications for filter material core material, backing material and charcoal.
