Zone refined iron is slowly attacked by acids. Rates obtained in 0.5 H HaSO4 and HC1 are 5.6 x 10-2 and 2,3 x 10-2mg cm-2hr-1 resp., at 25°C in the presence of air. In hydrogen the dissolution rates are slower. In a 3% HaCl solution the rate is about one fifth of that in 0.5 N HC1. The order of reaction starting with I H H2SO, is above 2, indicating that the rate is unduly slowed down at low concentrations of the acid and that the resistance to corrosion decreases with increasing concentration of the acid.
