摘要

A study was mad© to determine if the mechanism of the discharge and recovery of the vanadium pentoxide electrode was analogous to that proposed by Coleman (l) for the manganese dioxide electrode. Coleman proposed that the discharge and recovery were due to an accumulation of an oxy-hydroxide on the surface of the electrode with its subsequent diffusion into the body of the manganese dioxide. He suggested that the diffusing species were protons and electrons. The discharge and recovery of the vanadium pentoxide electrodes at moderate current densities and in solutions in the pH range from two to five, were found to reseable closely these processes in manganese dioxide, and the experiments described here were undertaken to ascertain if also in vanadium pentoxide the processes were diffusion-controlled.
