KOSSEL STUDIES OF IRON WHISKERS

The application of Kossel line techniques to the crystallo-graphic study of filamentary growths of iron has been demonstrated. The ability to investigate very small regions of a crystal lattice has proved to be extremely advantageous since this allows one to study in detail different portions along the axis of an iron whisker. Thermal gradients, which are the result of heating by the electron beam used to excite the X-ray source, can be detrimental to obtaining good patterns from whiskers less than 5 microns in thickness. The majority of the whiskers studied were a iron with a [111] direction coinciding with the whisker axis. A lattice parameter of 2.8671 + 0.0004 A was calculated for these whiskers and their crystal lattice appeared highly perfect. Other a iron whiskers with different orientations were investigated, some of which exhibited growth kinks. Fe 3°4 and a iron whiskers were found in the same boat on one occasion.
