A shock-pressure spiral transducer has been fabricated and determined capable of measuring 30 kilobars or less shock pressure to ±6 percent. A spiral of manganin is imbedded in a Plexiglas or epoxy matrix that is oriented so that the plane of the spiral is parallel to that of a shock front, which is generated in the matrix by gasgun accelerated metal plates. When the spiral carries a constant current, a voltage change proportional to the time-dependent pressure occurs as a result of the resistance change caused by the piezoresistive nature of manganin.nThis report describes the imbedding procedure, circuits for measuring the resist¬ance change, the calculated theoretical response of the transducer, the method used to produce the shock waves, and the experimental results obtained in shock-wave measurements.
