CHLORINATION REACTIVITY OF PLUTONIUM OXIDE PREPARED IN A SCREW CALCINER

The direct calcination of plutonium nitrate solution in a titanium screw calciner has been studied. A special batch chlorinator was developed to evaluate the reactivity of the oxide produced in the calciner.nIt was found that a satisfactory oxide could be produced by direct calcination, and that the oxide product showed little impurity pickup across the calciner. By use of an activating agent, the oxide could be chlorinated to better than 951 under optimum calciner and chlorinator operation. The chloride produced was successfully reduced to metal by electrowinning.
