LAKE VICTORIA ADDITIONAL DISCHARGES REPORT ON MODEL TESTS OF SIPHON SPILLWAYS FOR OWEN FALLS DAM

This report presents the results of the tests on models of siphons to be used for control of the level of Lake Victoria. A battery of six siphons will be installed on the East headrace dam, to pass a minimum of 14,000 cubic feet per second, (400 cubic metres per second) at a head over the crest of the siphon of 18 inches (0.457 metres). This quantity of flow will be additional to the existing range of between 10,500 and 43,000 cubic feet per second (300 and 1,200 cubic metres per second) that can be discharged through the six ground sluices. The siphons were calibrated for the full range of flow and head, and pressures were measured on the centre line of the crest and hood. All levels refer to mean sea level at Mombasa.
