This study was commissioned by the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and prepared by its consultant, Professor Rene Dumont, of the Institut National Agronomigue, Paris. It is part of the programme of the ECA/FAO Joint Agriculture Division. Its purpose is to initiate debate on the complex and difficult problems presented by the necessary transformation of African agriculture.nThe views and proposals expressed by Prof. Dumont have been requested by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, but do not necessarily represent those of the Commission nor of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
