Aqueous 0.1 N alkaline solutions of benzene have been irradiated with Co v-rays in the presence of various inorganic oxides. The addition to the solution of silica gel, copper (ll) oxide and chromium (lll) oxide did not increase the yield of phenol. When chromium(lll) oxide gel, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide were added, we obtained a 9 - 1 3 per cent increase, and the addition of uranium dioxide and thorium dioxide caused a 31 and 39 per cent increase, respectively.
