EFFECTS OF TASK CHARACTERISTICS ON GROUP PROCESS

This study is a laboratory investigation of the effects on group interaction and leader behavior of two group task characteristics:task "type" (production, discussion, problem solving) and level of task difficulty (high, medium, low). Incidental evidence on the effects of the ordinal position of tasks is presented.nResults show that task type significantly affects the distribution of more than 60％ of the group or leader activity. Level of task difficulty does not greatly affect group or leader activity. Ordinal position significantly differentiates the first task from the other three.nMethodological implications of the study are discussed.
