摘要

Vacuum ultraviolet photon-gas interactions leading to fluorescence in the visible wavelength region are presented for the gases O2, N2 and CO. This fluorescence is wave-length analyzed, and the results are discussed in terms of either known molecular structure or structure implied by the present experimental results,. It is argued that the observed fluorescence is primarily from excited states of molecular ions for each of the gases studied. The primary VUV radiation, obtained from a repetitive condensed spark discharge through 50 microns of air, consisted of a number of bright source lines between 1000 and 500 S. (12 to 24 eV). Each gas was studied in terms of the fluorescence resulting from excitation by several of the primary source lines, differing from each other by 0.15 eV, an energy difference comparable to the separation of typical low lying vibrational levels. The fluorescence wavelength analysis was obtained with a high aperture Czerny-Turner type monochromator having a bandwidth of 40 to 70 , the particular value selected being determined by the signal to noise ratio at the fluorescence photon counter.
