Four pairs of unstiffened cylinders composed of filament wound, glass-reinforced plastic were subjected to hydrostatic loading to determine the possible benefits to be gamed through the use of hollow filaments. Three pairs had hollow-filaments with different ratios of inner diameter to outer diameter, (0 55, 0 57, and 0.62) and the remaining pair employed solid fibers. The results indicate that this hollow-filament material has excellent static strength-weight characteristics for deep-submergence applications Before its feasibility can be fully established, however, further tests are needed, particular cchc loading studies and tests invoking modols with structural details.
