Cleavage of Organosulfur Compounds by Metals and Sulfene Chemistry

The stereochemistry of this cleavage has been studied and it has been found that cleavage of vinylic sulfides with either lithium or sodium in liquid ammonia affords the corresponding hydrocarbon with greater than 90 per cent retention of configuration. However, the cleavage is nonstereospecific when lithium in methylamine is used. The same results have been observed with the corresponding vinylic bromine compounds.
