ACCURACY OF SOURCE DATA HUMAN ERROR IN HAND TRANSCRIPTION

An experimental human factors study of human error in hand transcription was performed. The objectives were to determine under laboratory conditions, the effects on transcription accuracy of certain human factors, source data factors, task factors and environmental conditions. The factors were:n• Subject age, sex and occupationn• Arrangement of codes, and code content and structuren• Transcription method and form designn• Work period duration.nOther factors that were examined on a limited basis were:n• Character print (type font for certain characters)n• Instructions to subjects for improving handprinting legibility.nA pilot study and five experiments in two phases were conducted. Equal num¬bers of men and women, clerical and production workers, and people over 40 and under 30 years of age participated. Numeric codes and various arrange¬ments of alpha-numeric codes of lengths from 3 to 20 characters were used.nThe general findings were:n• Age and sex are significant factors in hand transcription accuracyn• The age factor interacts significantly with code contentn• The sex and occupation factors interact significantly.
