Applicability of Olfactory Transducers to the Detection of Human Beings.

The material presented here summarizes work performed for the period 1 February 1965 to 31 July 1965. Effort has been directed along three lines: continuation of the investigation of the slow potential electrical response of the antennal pit chemoreceptors of Lucilia sericata to ordorants; phase contrast and electron microscopic studies of the fine structure of the olfactory organs of this species; and development and testing of the hypothesis that the mechanism of olfactory transduction involves the coupling of odorant adsorption at the receptor cell site and development of the receptor potential through alteration of the enzymatic activity and molecular configuration of the receptor cell membrane adenosinetriphosephatase by the odorant.
