At the present time, there is no nuclear power system available for use as a beachhead plant. The plant which most closely approaches this mode of operation -- the gas-cooled reactor, closed-cycle power plant ML-1 (AEC Army Reactors Branch designation) has weight, volume and other operational characteristics which seriously limit its mobility and its adaptability to the contemplated use in this study.
