The discovery of detonation waves dates back to the late l800's. Since that time many studies of the fully-established detonation wave have been conducted. A detonation wave is a shock wave followed immediately by a combustion wave travelling through a combustible mixture. Until rather recently, little attention has been given to the build-up process from that of deflagration to the stable detonation wave A more thorough understanding of the particular combustion phenomenon is nec¬essary to elucidate some of the theories proposed to explain the growth disasterous oscillations in the combustion chambers of rocket engines other reaction-type engines, to advance the development of combus¬tion in supersonic streams, to promote the basic understanding of com¬bustion phenomena, and possibly to explain some of the accidents that have occurred to aircraft struck by lightning.
