摘要

The materials most widely employed for surgical sutures, silk and catgut, have a number of serious shortcomings. Silk is highly irritating to the surrounding tissues. According to data gathered by the pathomorphology laboratory of the Scientific Research Institute for Experi¬mental Surgical Apparatus and Instruments (NIIEKhAl), massive cellular infiltration develops rapidly in the tissues around a silk ligature. The cells surround and, to some extent, penetrate the suture. These in¬flammatory foci, in which polynuclear cells predominate, are observed 1-1 1/2 years after surgery. The drawbacks of catgut are well known, lying primarily in the difficulty of sterilizing it and in its indeter¬minate resorption time. There are also indications that catgut has allergizing properties.
