The first such conference opened on 24 May. In her introductory speech, Decode Enrique’s, dean of the faculty of exact sciences, noted the importance of geography for the socialist construction in the country, and approved the ini¬tiative of the university's geographers in the unification of the geographic efforts in Havana.nThe first report to the conference on "Geography and Politics" was made by the author of this article. It exposed the geopolitical fabrications which had gained wide currency in Cuba in the past. The report stimulated a lively exchange of opinion. Honored PbBr. Salvador Massif, the oldest Cuban geographer, pointed to the great Influence exerted by the reactionary U.S. geographers on the development of Cuban geography. The Cuban geographers had never before been familiar with the soviet geographic literature, but the appearance of that literature now has ushered in a new stage in the development of Cuban geography. S. Hassid called upon the Cuban scientists to make a profound study of the advanced theory and practice, of soviet geographic science.
