Investigation of Methods to Reduce Animal Damage to Wire and Cable

The paper investigates methods for rodent-proofing communication wire. The work remains unpublished but consisted of laboratory and field evaluation of communication wires coated with various plastics; no protective measures were developed. Welch also conducted limited investigations of damage to buried telephone cable. This work was included as part of the overall animal damage control research and was given no special emphasis. It was found that zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate cyclohexylamine complex reduced rodent attack on cables, but it did not prevent damage entirely. Stansbury tested seismograph cables treated with R-55 (tert-Butylsulfenyldimethyldithiocarbamate) in an area infested with wood rats. The rodents attacked untreated cables to a greater degree than the treated ones. (Author)
