A plymer derived from the condensation of Tetramethylol phosphonium chloride and a tetravalent zirconium compound was developed. This phospho-zirconium polymer (P-Z) was shown to have fire retardant qualities equivalent to those of antimony oxide. Two-phase elimination techniques were employed for synthesis. Initial studies indicated that the titanium analogs of the P-Z polymer were too unstable hydrolytically to be employed. However, the relative stability of the zirconium compound was good. Initial characterization indicated that the structure of the P-Z polymer is far more complex than would be expected on the basis of theoretical prediction. For example, the polymer appears to be water-soluble, yet its melting point is in excess of 250C. Excellent results were shown in the use of the P-Z polymer as a filler (50%) in compression moldings. Self-extinguishing pieces are realized. (Author)
