A Technique for Achieving Very High Antenna Gain. The Adaptively Phased Array

The design considerations of a phased array antenna system are given. The antenna was designed to demonstrate the adaptive phasing principle as applied to achieving high antenna gain in a communication satellite environment. Factors such as phase perturbances, signal distribution within the array, array bandwidth and pattern control are considered. An adaptively phased array consisting of four thirty-foot parabolic reflectors is described. Additionally the results obtained from the array in regard to signal-to-noise improvement as obtained in experiments with Echo II as well as signature studies of Echo II signals are described.
