The paper includes a solution of the self-modeling problem of the propagation of a plane shock wave in a nonhomogeneous atmosphere whose density varies exponentially (barometrically) in space. The shock wave travels in the direction of decreasing density. There is also a discussion of the self-modeling escape of a gas into a vacuum, which occurs after a shock wave departs into infinity and disappears. The data obtained can be used for an approximate description of an upper flow pattern produced by a violent explosion in a nonhomogeneous atmosphere. (Author)
