Twelve machined cylindrical models with length-todiameter ratios of approximately 5.0 were collapsed under external hydrostatic pressure to study the elastic buckling strength of metallic cylinders stiffened with low modulus, low density, relatively low strength materials. Three different configurations were studied; two-layered shells, continuous-core sandwich shells, and ringstiffened shells. The test results demonstrated that the use of low modulus materials in various stiffening systems can lead to significant increases in the elastic buckling strength of metallic cylindrical shells.
