Research Programs for Alerting, Detection, and Identification of Pathogens

The purpose of the program is to assess the feasibility of detecting bacteria by an investigation of their unique metabolic activities. The following investigations were conducted: (1) metabolic products from growth media; (2) metabolic products from resting cell suspensions; (3) extraction procedures for metabolic products; (4) gas chromatographic techniques; and (5) sensitivity of product detection. On the basis of present results, it is believed that the technique of gas chromatography is very promising not only for the detection of metabolic differences among different genera and species, but also among strains of a species.
