RESERCH ON CONSIDERATION OF TRAINING FUNCTIONS DURING DESIGN OF OPERATONAL EQUIPMENT

Based primarily upon experiences of designers and users, the feasibility of integrating means for training into operational military systems was determined. Definition of when, where, and how training provisions should be incorporated into new operational military system designs was prepared in the form of a handbook for systems designers. Of the representative systems studied, surveillance and fire control systems proved to be both more in need of "on-system" training and more amenable to incorporation of a training capability. A technique was developed for determining the feasibility of incorporating training provisions in a new design which involves interaction between the "Training Expert," the "Training Device Designer," and the "Equipment Designer." The handbook was prepared primarily for the latter, although it should be useful to the former, as well. Although the technique was applied (for example purposes) to two representative existing systems, application to an actual system under development is suggested to provide a valid test.
