A scattered light photo elastic method for investigating stresses in axially symmetric problems at room temperature under live loads is described. Using this method, observations are required in only one plane.nA scattered light polar scope using a Helium-Neon continuous wave gas laser as the light source was designed and assembled. The stresses in a simply-supported thick circular plate having a free span diameter of 3-in and a thickness of 1-in subjected to a concentrated load at the center were studied. Complete stress distributions were given for two con-centric cylindrical sections with radii of 0.3 and 0.84 inches respectively.
