The shear modulus of elasticity of a fiber reinforced composite is an extremely important mechanical property. The problem of experimentally determining appropriate shear modulus for orthotropic materials such as fiber reinforced composites is not as simple and straight-forward as in isotropic materials, and care must be taken both in the experimental methods and deviation and use of the appropriate equations.nThis report presents four acceptable methods for determining the shear modulus of ortho-tropic materials. Two methods are appropriate for determining in-plane shear modulus and two others are for determining "bending" shear modulus which is applicable in calculating buckling loads of laminated plates and shells. A discussion of each method precedes the method of experimental determination. The derivation of all pertinent equations are presented in the appendix for easy reference.
