A THREE-MODE FACTOR ANALYSIS OF CLINICAL JUDGMENT OF SCHIZOPHRENICITY

A three-mode factor analysis was computed using data obtained from Hunt and Walker's earlier study of clinical judgment and diagnosis (Hunt £ Walker, 1962). While the present report is an attempt to illustrate the usefulness of this factor analytic technique, several substantive findings emerged from the analysis. The information and the comprehension items from the WAIS from which the responses to be judged were derived appeared to be factorially pure, one from the other. The patients clustered into those reflecting each of two types of impairment, one type associated uniquely with organicity, and the second seemingly more generally associated with thinking impairment. It appeared from the core matrix box that the organic type of impairment was associated with vocabulary dysfunctioning while the thinking disability was related to inefficient comprehension.
