SEASONAL MOISTURE-TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTIONS IN MINED PODZOLIC SOIL

This investigation is part of a continuing study of soil properties and phenomena significant to the detection of buried mines and explosives. The purpose of this phase of investigation was: (1) To obtain data on the distri¬bution of moisture and temperatures in clay podzolic soils surrounding non-metallic land mines buried at typical operational depths, including diurnal and seasonal variations, (2) to correlate temperature anomalies with mois¬ture factors related to a land mine environment, and (3) to obtain a clearer understanding of the general mechanism by which thermal properties around a buried mine are influenced by soil moisture so that such relation¬ships might be utilized most effectively in detecting mines.
