AN X-RAY PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE REACTION KINETICS OF a-CELLULOSE DECOMPOSITION

This paper gives the results of an experiment designed to measure local values of heat and mass evolution rates in an initially homogeneous a-cellulosic solid heated rapidly from without. Heat evolution rates are deduced from temperature distribution by the method of Murty [5]. Mass evolution is measured from the change in density determined from successive x-ray photographs.nA first order Arrhenius expression fits the data provided a different value of the activation energy E is employed at each radius. E varies from 22 Kcal per mole near the surface to 13 Kcal per mole near the center of the cylindrical specimen.
