Transient Response Tests on Satellite Poppet Valves

The transient response of poppet valves designed for use in satellite gas jet attitude control systems were investigated. Measurements were made at various power levels on the standard form of the valve and also on a slightly modified version designed to operate at a lower power level. Oscillograms of the transient response and a table of results are given in this note. A method of reducing the valve opening time without increasing the steady state power consumption is suggested. Measurements were made on the transient response of this system which involves discharging a capacitor through the torque motor at the instant of thrust demand. The advantages and limitations of this system are briefly indicated. (Author)
