Various types of waveguides for the purpose of propagating very high average power with very low loss have been investigated. The most promising mode is considered to be the TE sub 01 mode in greatly oversized circular waveguides. Tentatively the waveguide diameter is about 30 inches for X-band operation with an attenuation of about 3 X 0.000001 db/foot. After investigating several taper designs and fabrication techniques, the multi-conical design approach has been selected for this program. The large diameter portions of the taper and the full-size circular waveguide sections will likely be fabricated from sheet metal which is rolled, welded and reinforced. Rectangular waveguide test tapers have been designed and fabricated. By using these, mode conversion characteristics will be measured. A spinning dipole mode analyzer will be used to measure mode conversion in the circular waveguide. Assembly of the components has been started. (Author)
